Do you suffer from dental anxiety? You shouldn’t be. We’ve all sat in the dentist’s chair and we don’t like to feel pain, either.
Our patients know that dentistry doesn’t have to hurt. Dr. Ochsner and team are gentle and make sure each patient is as comfortable as possible for all treatments. No one should avoid dental treatment because of anxiety.
How do we do it? We use the latest in sedation techniques to make all of our patients comfortable and relaxed. Many of our patients say they are surprised at how little pain they feel. Our dentists and team will speak with you about your options and access your pain levels throughout your treatment to make sure you are comfortable.
Here are some types of sedation:
- Inhaled minimal sedation – Patients relax by breathing nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” — mixed with oxygen through a mask. Dentists control the sedation level.
- Oral sedation – This can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, patients take a pill such as Halcion, similar to Valium, about an hour before treatment. The pill makes patients drowsy, but allows them to stay awake. Larger doses can provide moderate sedation, a level that can cause someone to fall asleep during the procedure.
- IV moderate sedation – Patients receive a sedative drug through a vein, so it works more quickly and can be adjusted by the dentist.
- Deep sedation and general anesthesia – Patients get medications that will make them nearly unconscious or totally unconscious – in a deep sleep. Patients under general anesthesia cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.
The most important thing is to keep the communication open. If you feel pain or are anxious, simply let us know and we’ll take care of it.
